Job Description Title: Clinical Dietitian Department 
Food and Nutrition Classification: Exempt

Job Summary:

The Clinical Dietitian plans, directs, and provides Nutrition Therapy designed to assist patients in reaching their maximum level of nutrition status. Communicates and builds positive relationships with patients, physicians, and staff.

Job Relations:

A. Responsible To: Reports to Food & Nutrition Services Director
B. Workers Supervised: General supervision of designated Food and Nutrition Services staff
C. Interrelationship/Contacts include but are not limited to: Continuous day-to-day working relations with the Food and Nutrition Staff. Daily contacts with patients, family members, interdisciplinary team members, physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel Clinical Dietitian.

Qualifications:

A. Education/Registry: Bachelor's degree in Nutrition / Dietetics. Masters degree preferred. Current Licensure by the State of NC. Member of the American Dietetic Association a plus.
B. Experience and Training: At least two years of experience or in Dietitian services
C. Special Qualifications and Job Knowledge:

  • Requires ability to read, analyze, and interpret professional journals, technical procedures, and government regulations.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Must have ability to speak effectively before groups of patients, families, staff, and the public.
  • Requires ability to collect and interpret data while applying mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Must be computer literate with the ability to demonstrate an understanding of word processing, spreadsheets, presentation programs, and nutritional software programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Performs nutrition assessments and screens on patients on , ICU, OB, and Medical Surgical. Initial and Follow-up nutritional assessments include anthropometric measurements, biochemical data, medications, and adequacy of nutrition intake.
  • Calculates the nutritional needs of patients and makes appropriate recommendations to physicians.
  • Calculates the nutritional needs for nutrition support and the formularies appropriate for tube feedings and TPN.
  • Writes and updates care plans and completes necessary forms including MDS and RAPS.
  • Participates in Interdisciplinary Patient Care Meetings and communicates with appropriate staff as needed to achieve optimal nutritional care.
  • Conducts meal rounds on patient floors to enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Checks the tray line and conducts test trays to ensure accuracy and quality of foods served.
  • Educates patient and families on individualized medical nutrition therapy in an inpatient and outpatient setting following the appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Teaches medical nutrition therapy in outpatient group classes following appropriate policies and procedures.
  • Develops medical nutrition therapy education materials for use in nutrition education.
  • Collects data for Quality Improvement Monitoring.
  • Maintains and updates Dietitian policies and procedures.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and reviews literature to remain informed of Clinical Dietitian.
  • Monitors food/drug interaction educations.
  • Performs other dietetic duties as assigned.
  • Provides good customer service to meet SRMC customer satisfaction goals.
  • Provides quality of patient care to meet national patient safety goals.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Work consists of lifting moderate to heavy weights up to 50 pounds, bending, sitting, standing for long periods, scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, and climbing ladders. May be required to push or pull equipment and metal carts weighing more than 50 lbs. Will be exposed to work in kitchen areas with intermittent temperature changes when going into refrigerators and freezers down to –10 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Hours of Work: Normally works eight (8) hour days Monday - Friday. May work other hours for the effective operation of the department.
