“Managing and Reversing Prediabetes: What Can RDNs Do for 98 Million Americans with Prediabetes” - Jill Weisenberger, MS, RDN, CDCES, CHWC, FAND
Lecture Summary: The latest statistics show that approximately 96 million adults in the US have prediabetes, the leading risk factor of type 2 diabetes and a major risk factor for coronary artery disease. Every registered dietitian nutritionist who works with adults in the general population works with people with prediabetes, though the majority are unaware that they have high blood sugar levels. More than 1 in 3 adults has the condition. The primary goal of lifestyle intervention has been to prevent type 2 diabetes. But is that enough? Research shows that prediabetes in not a benign condition, as people with prediabetes have higher-than-average rates of both microvascular and macrovascular disease. This session examines the current state of scientific knowledge of the pathophysiology of prediabetes and the results of diabetes prevention and reversal studies in various parts of the world. Attendees will use their knowledge of the disease process to individualize goals for people with prediabetes and to recommend various foods and types of exercise to include.

"The Rising Epidemic of Pre-diabetes in Asian Indian Population" - Lavanya Kethamukkala, RDN, LDN
Lecture Summary: Asian Indians (AIs), the second-largest immigrant population in the United States, face a disproportionately higher risk of dysglycemia at a younger age and lower body mass index (BMI) compared to other ethnic groups. This predisposition leads to an earlier onset of pre-diabetes, Type II diabetes mellitus (DM), and cardiovascular disease. The community could significantly benefit from culturally competent practitioners offering education, resources, and support to prevent or delay the onset of pre-diabetes, thereby reducing the economic burden.

Lecture Summary: Integrative health practice is the use of traditional (i.e., medication) and complementary (i.e., yoga) health practice together to treat and/or prevent diseases. Use of complementary health practices has been shown to increase flourishing, which is an overall sense of mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Discussion will include how to incorporate integrative health practices both professionally with clients/patients and personally to promote flourishing.

“Food as Medicine” - Elaine Jones, RDN, LDN
Lecture Summary: As Dietitians, we are charged with the authority and responsibility to help our patients, community members, and providers better understand the powerful (and undeniable) link between Food and Chronic Disease. One of the major nuances of this practice is unveiling the unique barriers to nutrition education and food access that may exist within each individual. Once we establish a common platform for education, we can begin the journey of empowering people with the knowledge of how to use Food As Medicine.
